Pointy the rhinoceros stands on the African savanna at dawn, snout raised high, sniffing the air with total excitement. Vast golden grasslands stretch behind him with acacia trees silhouetted against an orange sunrise.
PointyFriends. FRIENDS. Come here right now. You will NOT believe what I found.

Pointy had discovered something incredible in the ground!

Pointy has found a massive termite mound. Hundreds of tiny ants march in a perfectly organized line. Pointy crouches down, snout nearly touching the ground, eyes huge and fascinated.
PointyAN ANT HIGHWAY. Underground. With rooms. And a QUEEN.
ZipWait β€” they built actual ROOMS underground?!
FrostHow do they know where to go without GPS?

The whole crew arrived to explore the ant world!

View from ant-level: Pointy's giant face and snout peer down at a team of ants carrying a leaf fragment many times their size. Pure wonder on Pointy's face.
PointyThey leave scent trails! Like... invisible roads. Made of smell.
ZipThat's the coolest thing I've ever heard.
FrostAgreed. Unexpectedly impressive, ants.

Ant colonies have special underground rooms β€” food, eggs, queen!

Pointy, Zip, and Frost all crouch together on the savanna examining an elaborate ant colony entrance. Zip sketches in a little notebook, Frost watches thoughtfully.
Pointy5 ants on trail one, 8 on trail two, 3 on trail three. I counted.
Zip5 + 8 + 3 = 16! Math in the WILD!
PointyI'm not just a pretty snout, Zip.

Counting and adding β€” math is everywhere in nature!

Your turn β€” screen goes OFF!

TRY THIS AT HOME! Find a safe ant trail outdoors (or look for ants in the grass). Count how many ants pass a single spot in 30 seconds. Do it 3 times! Add all 3 counts together. Which trail was busiest? Draw a picture of where you think their underground rooms might be β€” food room, egg room, queen's room!
