Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all (Biological Evolution: Adaptations).

Frost the penguin steps off a small biplane onto a jungle airstrip surrounded by impossibly dense green rainforest. He fans himself with one flipper, mouth open from the heat, sweat droplets flying. Zip grins and gestures 'Welcome!'
FrostZip. It is ninety-four degrees. I am ninety-four percent water right now.
ZipWelcome to MY house!! Isn't it AMAZING?!
FrostNo. Yes. I don't know. I can't think. It's so warm.

Frost had never, ever, EVER felt rainforest heat before.

Frost stands drenched under a massive tropical leaf being used as an umbrella, still overheated. Zip swings overhead on a vine, completely at home, laughing. Pointy hugs a tree in the background.
FrostI have blubber. Blubber is for cold. This was a mistake.
ZipMy fur keeps me cool! Your blubber keeps you warm! We're both built for OUR home!
Frost...That is actually very interesting.

Different habitats, very different rules for surviving.

Zip holds up two small illustrations like show-and-tell β€” one showing Antarctica (cold, icy, sparse), one showing the Rainforest (hot, wet, lush). Frost looks thoughtfully at both images.
ZipAntarctica: cold, icy, almost no plants. Rainforest: hot, SUPER rainy, millions of plants.
FrostBoth have water. Both have animals that figured out how to survive.
PointyBoth have food. That's all I needed to know.

Same planet. Wildly different homes. Every one is perfect for its animals.

Frost, Zip, and Pointy stand together at the edge of the rainforest at golden hour, looking out at the horizon. Frost wears a tiny straw hat and sunglasses and is finally smiling. Zip has his arm around Frost's shoulder.
FrostI still prefer cold. But this was... worth it.
ZipEvery habitat is special! Adaptations = nature's way of fitting in!
PointyCan we go somewhere with more ants next time? Asking for me.

Different homes, same friends β€” the world needs ALL habitats!

πŸ—ΊοΈ πŸ’ Zip's Mission for you

Your turn β€” screen goes OFF!

TRY THIS AT HOME! Make a compare-and-contrast chart! Draw two columns: "Rainforest" and "Antarctica". Fill in: temperature, amount of rain, types of plants, and one animal from each. Then find one thing that's the SAME in both places. (Hint: both have water! Both have animals that found a way to survive!)
