Zip discovers the pond is getting smaller — but WHERE did the water GO?

Zip the capuchin stands on a rock at the edge of a rainforest pond that is half-empty, gesturing with both arms toward the low water line. Frost the penguin holds a notepad and looks analytically at the exposed muddy banks. Pointy the rhinoceros sniffs the muddy pond edge with his long snout. Zip discovered the pond had gotten smaller!

Zip holds a clear glass of water up to the golden sunshine on a flat rock. Frost writes in a small notebook below. Pointy lies on his belly with his snout near the pond surface watching invisible vapor rise. Tiny upward arrows and wavy wisps show water evaporating from the pond and glass. Speech bubbles: Zip says "The water goes UP!" Frost says "Rising vapor. This is evaporation." Pointy says "Watching water disappear..."

Zip drives a coral-colored stick into the mud bank at the current water line, with a small flag labeled "START LINE". Frost uses a ruler to measure and takes notes in his notebook. Pointy lies on his belly watching the pond with his snout near the water surface. Warm golden sun rays come from the upper left corner. Speech bubbles: Zip says "We mark where the water IS today!" Frost says "Then we wait and watch. Patience."

They marked the water line and decided to wait!

The marked coral stick shows the pond water is now LOWER than the original START LINE, with a dotted arrow showing the original higher level. All three characters celebrate: Zip jumps on a rock with arms raised high, Frost gives a calm satisfied thumbs-up with one flipper, Pointy wiggles happily with his tail. TRY THIS AT HOME! Fill a clear cup with 1 inch of water. Put a small colored sticker on the outside at the current water level. Place the cup in a sunny window. Wait 2 hours, then check — the water level has gone DOWN! Measure how much it dropped. The water didn't disappear — it EVAPORATED into invisible vapor and went into the air! Can you catch the water? Cover the cup with plastic wrap and leave it in the sun — tiny drops will form on the plastic (condensation)!
