The crew hears a mysterious sound from far away. What IS sound? How does it travel? They discovered it's invisible waves of vibration through the air!
They heard something far away β and followed the sound!
Sound is vibration β it travels in invisible waves through the air!
Sound travels from place to place β like a wave through the air!
Sound = vibration, traveling through air to our ears!
TRY THIS AT HOME! Make a phone call with cups! Poke a small hole in the bottom of two paper cups. Thread a long string (20+ feet) through both holes and tie knots to secure. Pull the string taut between two people. One person speaks into their cup while the other holds their cup to their ear β they can hear you through the string! Sound traveled through the string (solid) better than through air. Try: is sound louder when the string is tighter? Can you send vibrations by plucking the string like a guitar?
