Sound is vibration β€” it travels in invisible waves through the air!

Panel 3
ZipThe sound goes from me, through the air, all the way to you!
FrostThat's why we need air β€” without air, sound can't travel at all.
PointyIn space, nobody can hear you scream. Because there's no air to carry the sound!

Sound travels from place to place β€” like a wave through the air!

Panel 4

Your turn β€” screen goes OFF!

TRY THIS AT HOME! Make a phone call with cups! Poke a small hole in the bottom of two paper cups. Thread a long string (20+ feet) through both holes and tie knots to secure. Pull the string taut between two people. One person speaks into their cup while the other holds their cup to their ear β€” they can hear you through the string! Sound traveled through the string (solid) better than through air. Try: is sound louder when the string is tighter? Can you send vibrations by plucking the string like a guitar?
