Organisms have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction. Plants use light, water, and carbon dioxide to produce glucose and oxygen β€” photosynthesis.

Pointy the rhinoceros stands in a sunny rainforest clearing, one of his 4 legs raised as he points at a big green leaf. Zip the capuchin hangs from a vine above, head tilted in confusion. Frost the penguin observes with a small magnifying glass. The leaf looks vibrant and alive against bright sunshine.
PointyLook! A leaf! But wait β€” the soil is DRY. How is this growing?!
ZipWater falls from the sky... but the ground is dry. Something else is feeding it.
FrostLeaves are green because of something inside them. Chlorophyll.

Pointy found something growing β€” but where did it come from?

Pointy, Zip and Frost stand around a transparent test tube setup in the rainforest. A plant in water with a glass bubble over it. Tiny bubbles float up from the plant leaves underwater. Zip points at the bubbles with excitement. Frost takes careful notes. Pointy sniffs the air near the plant.
ZipWait β€” the plant is making BUBBLES? Is it breathing?
FrostPlants breathe IN carbon dioxide and breathe OUT oxygen. Just like us, but backwards!
PointySo plants eat air AND drink light? That's the weirdest diet I have ever heard.

They built a mini experiment to see what plants do with sunlight!

Zip swings on a vine holding up a comparison chart he made: on one side a sun, water drop, and CO2 cloud, on the other side plant leaves and a happy face, with arrows pointing from inputs to outputs. Frost nods approvingly. Pointy's snout sniffs the plant happily. Colorful comparison graphic.
ZipLight + water + CO2 = plant food! That's what photosynthesis means!
FrostAnd the oxygen bubble coming out? That's what animals breathe. Plants give us air!
PointySo if there were no plants, there would be no air for anyone. Plants are... important.

Plants turn sunlight, water and air into FOOD β€” photosynthesis!

TRY THIS AT HOME! Plant a seed and watch it grow over 2 weeks. Fill a clear cup with soil, plant a bean seed 1 inch deep, water it, and put it in sunlight. Every day, draw what you see. Measure the stem height with a ruler. Write down: Day 1 β€” seed. Day 3 β€” root appears. Day 5 β€” sprout! Day 7 β€” first leaf! By Day 14, you have a plant that turned light + water + air into LEAVES! That's photosynthesis β€” your plant is eating sunlight!
